Day 1 Arrival in Umbria, 3-night HB stay in a hotel in the Perugia – Corciano area.
Day 2 After breakfast, leave for a guided tour of Assisi. Assisi, built on the slope of Mount Subasio, is the city of Saint Francis. The visit to the Medieval centre is a “must”; Giotto’s frescoes in the Basilica and the Basilica of Santa Chiara are milestones of Italy’s history of art. Leave for Gubbio. The city draws in the visitor with its characteristic streets and piazzas, towers and Gothic churches.
Day 3 Breakfast in the hotel, followed by a guided tour of Perugia, an important historic city with two of the most renowned universities in Italy. Strolling through the Roman-Etruscan town centre you will see: the Rocca Palieri, Corso Vannucci, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Fontana Maggiore, the Duomo and the Belvedere. Later, visit Spello, a lovely medieval town in Umbria. Sights: Porta Consolare, Porta Venere, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Pinturicchio’s frescoes. After a cappuccino break, free time to have lunch and stroll around the streets.
Day 4 After breakfast we drive along the Calanchi Nature Reserve to Atri, on the coast, one of the most important towns of the Abruzzi Renaissance. It boasts numerous works of art, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, with the most beautiful cycle of Renaissance paintings in the region, Palazzo Acquaviva, the Teatro Comunale, St. Augustine Church and a marvellous panorama from which the eye can wander from the sea to the summit of Gran Sasso. 2-night HB stay in a hotel in the Pescara area.
Day 5 After breakfast in the hotel, travel to Sulmona, a city brimming with fantastic works, birthplace of the poet Ovid and famous for its candied almonds. Drive to Anversa degli Abruzzi on a road that cuts through the impressive “Gole del Sagittario” (Sagittarius Gorge), where, on a local farm, you will learn everything that there is to know about cheese making. Snack with local specialities included. In the afternoon, tour of Scanno, famous for its handicrafts (lace pillows, filigree work, wrought iron work, etc.) and for the ancient customs of its inhabitants. After visiting a workshop, return to the hotel and dinner.
Day 6 After breakfast, departure.
