The ancient Akragas, founded as a Greek colony in the 4th century BC, became one of the wealthiest, most populated and powerful cities. The awe inspiring site known as “The Valley of the Temples”, with the remains of the former city walls and the finds on display in the archaeological museum, serves to document the magnificence of this wealthy town, which was destroyed twice because its rich, lazy inhabitants were more interested in trade and money instead of defending the town. The most famous temple, the Temple of Concord, is the best-preserved building of Magna Grecia.
