A few kilometres from Florence lies Prato, an extraordinary thriving city with a vibrant cultural and economic life. The first settlement was made under the Longobards. During the Middle Ages the town developed around the church and the castle. The 14th century walls with typical towers still enclose the ancient city centre. Prato built its wealth on cloth manufacturing and commerce. Beyond it is birthplace of Francesco Marco Datini, the inventor of accountancy. After the fierce battles in 1351 its industry and economy suffered a decline. Only in the 18th century the textile industry regained its leading position and the wealthy families were able to rebuild their palaces. During the 20th century Prato expanded until it became capital of the province in 1992.
