Once a prosperous town, destroyed following a volcanic eruption by Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii serves to document how life was in ancient times. The magnificence and diversity of the ruins and the idyllic landscape convey a moving sense of how this Roman town looked like under the empire. We visit the Antiquarium, where documents of the town’s history are preserved and basic commodities and mill models are on display. The casts of people and animals at the moment of death are particularly moving. We visit the forum, once the centre of public life, where the largest buildings and the temples are located.
