In the quiet plain near the mouth of the river Sele close to the Tyrrhenian sea are the ruins of the temple of Paestum with the acropolis and a number of well known ancient buildings of the Greek peninsula that provide impressive examples of Greek architectural style in Europe. These are the remains of Poseidonia, a flourishing town founded around 600 B.C. by the Greeks, whose charm has been celebrated by Ovid, Horace and other Roman poets. Today only findings from three temple attest to the magnificence of this disappeared town.
