Otranto lies on the Adriatic coast of Salento on the real “Heel of Italy”. Porta Alfonsina, a military building erected by Alfonso of Aragon, is the entry gate to the fortified city. The walk on the parapet of the fortress will show you the famous port born on a beautiful natural bay. In Piazza Basilica stands the cathedral with its facade, one of Apulia’s most important Romanic monuments. The wonderful pavement mosaic from 1166 provides a unique artistic example of this kind in southern Italy.
