Washed by the sea that penetrates into the historic centre through the Medici canals, Livorno has all the charm of a Tuscany town stretching to the Mediterranean sea.
The history, the traditions, the culture, the spectacular sunset, the clear perfumed air, the water sport, the gastronomic traditions: all this testifies the strong link between Livorno and the sea.
Here Europe’s first swimming baths were built in the 19th century along with the idea of summer holidays.
The characterictic neighborhood called “Venezia Nuova” (new Venice) was built in the 17th century and has maintained its original appearance: the Medici tombs, a network of navigable canals, which connected the warehouse to the houses of traders as in Venice.
Stroll along via Borra for a glimpse of the elegant architecture of merchants’ houses. A fine example is the Bottini dell’Olio building, with wonderful decorated halls.
Today the Piazza della Repubblica bewitches visitors with its particular structure, a huge bridge that extends over a long stretch of the navigable canal.
