Already known as the city of the elephant while under Arab domination, the pachyderm is Catania‘s symbol to this day. In fact, legend has it that an elephant freed the territory of ferocious beasts and made the settling of the city possible. Repeatedly destroyed by powerful earthquakes and eruptions from Mount Etna, the city has always been rebuilt with its splendour and vigour intact. Beyond the most important ancient sites, you will also visit the fish market which animates the city every morning (except Sundays); afterwards you can enjoy a delicious almond or espresso granita. In the evening you explore Taormina (on your own), famous for its Greek theatre and where you should try the excellent gelato. A daytime excursion will be dedicated to visiting Syracuse’s archaeological area as well as the baroque city of Noto.

Day 1 Arrive in Catania, check in to the hotel for 3 nights half-board

Day 2 In the morning, after breakfast, a guided tour of downtown Catania; especially the Fontana dell ‘ Elefante and the Cathedral in Piazza Duomo; and, finishing off with the fish market where you will find a series of ancient lava-rock steps supporting countertops laden with fresh fish. You can try the famous Sicilian granita in a historic city cafe. The afternoon is free for touring on your own. After dinner at the hotel, there is a trip to Taormina is planned where you can sample artisanal gelato.

Day 3 After breakfast, departure for an excursion to Syracuse; the seaside city is full of history and monuments, from extraordinarily artefacts like the ancient Greek theatre to the baroque beauty of the island of Ortigia. You continue on to Noto, exploring the town by walking along the monumental Corso Umberto with its reconstructed Cathedral, Theatre, and Palazzo Nicolaci. Return for dinner at the hotel.

Day 4 Breakfast and return departure.
