Catania

The town was destroyed several times by extensive lava flows of Etna, yet thanks to its own efforts the town became even more beautiful. Catania lies on the only wide fertile plain of Sicily, where in winter times you can smell orange and lemon flowers.

Despite past destruction, earth quakes and eruptions, the town is rich in elegant avenues, most of them consist of black lava. The wide long beach counts among the most spectacular ones in Sicily. Catania is the birthplace of the opera composer Bellini who is buried in the Dome.
