The Casentino is the upper valley which the Arno river runs through from Mount Falterona, where the river springs, to the vicinity of Arezzo. This exceptionally attractive area offers a soft landscape full of century-old forests and scattered fortified medieval villages and cloisters. The natural setting with luxurious vegetation reminds the German and French mountains covered with forests and vegetation.

The imposing castle of Romena looks over the castle of Poppi that inspired the construction of the city hall in Florence. The village with its maze of lanes offers dramatic views over the valley and the surrounding mountains.

In the cloister La Verna Saint Francis received the stigmata (wounds). The cloister includes several buildings hosting precious terracotta by Andrea and Luca della Robbia.
