Departure at around 8:00. The highway “Dei Fiori” takes us to France along the Moyenne Corniche offering glorious views of Cap Ferrat and the bay of Villefranche, later we head for Cannes along this strip of the Côte d’Azur punctuated by numerous villages: Cagnes sur Mer, Antibes, Juan les Pins, Golf Juan, Cannes. Cannes is the most elegant town and is considered the pearl of the Côte d’Azur. Thanks to its location overlooking the Lerin Islands, its bay with fine sandy beach and its luxury hotels and villas it has become a worldwide renowned jet set.
A ferry journey takes us to the largest of the Lerin Islands, St. Marguerite, which today is a true botanic garden rich in walking trails. In the 15th century the inhabitants of the island started to deforest the island for agricultural purposes. The island hosts a fortress that was also used as a prison from 1685 until the 20th century. Today the fortress houses a small aquarium and a museum where impressive grave remains are on display such as a Roman wreckage, amphora, Roman ceramics etc. Since the 19th century the Municipality of Cannes has been strongly engaged to keep this quiet paradisiacal garden unspoilt. The island St. Marguerite is also the scene of the novel “The three musketeers ” by Dumas and the prison of “The Man in the Iron Mask”. We take the highway back to the hotel.
