When you drive from Lucca to Pontedera along the Monte Pisano, you leave the Tuscany area most known to the world. No cypresses line the road, no hotels nor crowds. When you enter the narrow valley of Pieve a Compito, you will see an usual Tuscany with quiet towns, olive trees on to the hillside, but above all bright centuries-old Hydrangeas and Camelias in a surprising variety of colours. Right here stands Villa Orsi, a villa from the 19th century with a small garden, famous for its camelias. Try the local organic olive oil together with other specialties, including the regional spelt soup. But first, pay a visit to the narrow and pretty streets that lead from the city to the hill…
